Written by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence was signed by all the member of the Second Continental Congress. It was written to try to break off from British Colonies. North America sought Independence in July of 1776 and signed for it on July 4 1776.
The Declaration of Independence did many things for the United States. Such as United States being a democracy. It is not a Monarchy like England. The Declaration was the cause of the American Revolution which the United States won. Because we won we were able to be free from England or Great Britain and develop our own way of governing.

This is a political cartoon about the Declaration of Independence. In this cartoon the man in the middle says "Sweet! Now when do we declare Independece from British petroleum?" Then the guy on the right says "and OPEC, and Canada, and Mexico." The guy on the right is trying to say that the United States is not only declaring Independence from Britain. He is saying that the were trying to be Independent from everyone. This is not true though. We declared independece from Mexico in the Mexican-American War, and Canada has left us alone.
