Today we have our Independence.
Many aspects of the declaration reflect the character of America today.
The refusal to put up with what is wrong, and the insistence of living by what is right. A logical and legalistic summary of what is wrong, followed by a declaration of a remedy--that is, a declaration of independence. The teaching of the declaration to students insures that its principles will live on. The writing itself is "good writing." The sentences are inspiring. The Declaration leaves the reader with a sense that proper expression is important. Jefferson was a brilliant writer, notwithstanding the fact that some of his expression was borrowed. The Declaration is a proactive document. It is not merely a passive statement, but an active statement of what the colonists were doing to remedy the situation--fighting a war, which would result in severance from the mother country. Americans today are a very proactive country. Knowing about the Declaration should make you a proactive person, like George W. Bush and Barack |
